Sport Psychology

Youth and Adolescent Sport Athletes
As a young athlete, working on the fundamentals seems to be the key to learning your sport. While focusing on the physical parts of the game is very important, practicing mental skills can help set you up for success, both in and out of sport! Including mental skills training early in a sport career can help athletes acquire skills faster, gain more confidence, and enjoy sport for a longer period of time.

Collegiate Athletes
Sometimes it can be challenging to balance the demands of both academics and sport! Performance enhancement skills training can assist you to identify strategies that will help you not only in your sport, but can apply to academic performance as well. Common focus points may include anxiety management, increasing focus/concentration, improving motivation, managing expectations, and achieving consistent performance and effort in practice and competitions. However, as a college student-athlete, many different situations and circumstances may come up, and we will work together to form an action plan that will assist you in managing whatever difficulties you are experiencing.

Professional and Elite Athletes
As a professional or elite athlete, you have worked hard over a long period of time to have reached your current level of achievement! As you reach higher levels of sport, winning and losing comes down to consistency, mental toughness, and eliminating mistakes. Through mental skills training, you will learn how to effectively modify and manage your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors during practice and performance situations. In addition, we can develop a personalized performance plan that can assist you as you attain higher levels.

Teams and Sport Organizations
To be a successful team or organization, each team member needs to learn important mental skills to function effectively as a unit. These skills, such as communication, goal-setting, motivation, and confidence, facilitate team cohesion, positively impacting sport performance. During a half- or full-day team presentation or workshop, your team can gain an understanding of how to use mental skills and practice using them together! These workshops and presentations can be a great opportunity for team-building while helping each team member learn about and how to use mental skills to enhance performance.

Parents and Parent Groups
While being a ‘sport parent’ can be a great deal of fun, it is not always easy! Watching your child participate in sport can become emotionally exhausting as they navigate the ‘ups and downs’ of competition! During ‘parent workshops’ (or meeting one on one with parents), you can learn how to best support your child through sport. For example, you will learn how to best communicate with them, understand how they are motivated, and how to effectively build their confidence and self-esteem!

Injured Athletes
While participating in sport can leave you emotionally excited or exhausted, becoming injured can be a completely different adjustment as you are no longer able to maintain control over your workouts or sport participation! Since many athletes have been in their sport for a long period of time, this can be a very challenging transition. During our meetings, you can learn how to use mental skills to help you maintain some sense of control over your body and mind to positively cope with your injury, and gain support in this process! We can also develop a personalized ‘get back in the game’ plan to improve your mood and success once you are able to return to your sport!

‘Retired’ Athletes
No longer able to participate at the same level of sport? Do you miss your sport, the intensity of workouts, or connection with teammates? For many athletes, these types of reactions are very common! It can be very difficult to lose something that you were engaged in everyday and feel a sense of loss over what you are missing. During one-on-one meetings, you can gain support through this process and use mental skills (the same ones that assisted you in competition and some new ones as well!) to become energized, optimistic, and re-engaged in your life!
